Yes, the events in the play are all factual. Michael Downey drew from his family history, the social and political developments of the 1960s and 70s, and his personal experiences to create his play. The authenticity of the play's events are also reinforced by personal photographs that are projected onto a scrim during the performance.

How much does it cost to have The War Shirt perform at our theater?
The fees will vary depending on the particular performance package that is being requested. This would include the number of performances that would be done. Currently a live hour and six minute solo performance by Michael and a 45 minute documentary are available.These can be presented together on the same program, or they can be presented individually. All of these factors as well as travel costs and accommodations for Michael and his technical director will impact the the total cost.

The War Shirt works on several levels and weaves together insights from African American, American Indian, and LGBTQ+ perspectives. When the play was originally performed in Santa Barbara, CA in 2022, the director gathered written feedback from audiences. We discovered that our play was meaningful to people of various ages, gender identifications, and ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The play is titled THE WAR SHIRT. There is also a 45 minute documentary that carries forward the story that unfolds in the play. The documentary is titled THE WAR SHIRT: A DIALOGUE WITH THE ANCESTORS. Depending on what best serves your particular circumstances you may present both play and documentary on the same program, or either one separately.
